dreams, trips, and other nonsense.

1. dreams and their results
2. trips home this weekend
3. why 4-ps rocks

1. well, i've picked up another entirely foolish habit which I'm sure I'll dump soon out of boredom... I've begun to write a novel.
Ok, now that you've stopped laughing, take me seriously. I make no promise that it's any good -- in fact, that's the whole point of this program I'm doing. It's like the Marine Corps Marathon, only for losers!
No, really. The whole concept is to write a novel in 30 days, good, or bad, or just plain ugly. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense to just do it, rather than offhandedly set a goal for sometime in the vague future. So, take a look at mine.

2. B. and I headed to NoVa this weekend to visit our friend, Jewish Ben, but ended up coming home early due to serious illness on the part of B. It's odd to head back to a suburb full of -- well, space, and lots of it, and to be dependent on a car for everything. It was a nice visit, in spite of seeing my poor poor rapidly aging cat.

B., Jewish Ben, and I did get to sit in Oakton Family (the dive to beat all dives) to lament the political situation of the U.S. Throughout this discussion, of which I hardly ever participate, I sat staring at a TV in the restaurant (I'm no longer used to the bright, moving image and am therefore enthralled) and feeling my blood pressure rise while watching FoxNews.
Now, I know it's all been said before, but -- My God! It's not even that it's conservatively biased (although that doesn't go down so well either) -- it's that it's just campy! The headlines left much to be desired. That's the one problem with 24-hour news.. when it's motivated by bottom dollars, they hesitate to air the nuances of the Cote d'Ivoire issues and just replay the same non-news shit like the Peterson trial.

3. The Four Ps just rocks. I can't help it, I wish I was Irish, and this is the reason. They have live Irish music on Fridays and Saturdays, and B. and I have become groupies of a sort of the rockinest bassist player. He's nuts and awesome -- he loves to play his music, even if it's the simplest 3 chord repeat. I'm telling you, he goes crazy on the stage -- it's just one step away from Tourettes. It's great though, especially in this crispy November weather.

My First Exercise in Democracy

Well, kids, it's finally here -- election day -- which, as far as I'm concerned, should be declared a national holiday only by virtue of its entertainment factor.

I'm basing my hopes on the two completely spurious electoral predictors:
  • The Redskins lost their game;

  • The Dow dipped by .5%.

Both are indicators for Kerry. Let us see.... this should be fun, for my first time!

ps. Yalla Vote!

Savage Love
"Did I imply the superiority of morals in Canada to values taught in Saudi Arabia? Jesus H. Christ, SOS, I feel terrible about that. So let me set the record straight: I never meant to imply the superiority of morals in Canada over values taught in Saudi Arabia. I meant to state, loudly and clearly and for the record, the absolute superiority of morals in Canada over values taught in Saudi Arabia.

"Let us count the ways in which Canada is superior: equality of the sexes, political and religious pluralism, a little thing called democracy, and, of course, the radical notion that consenting adults are free to have sex with other consenting adults without having to worry about being lashed or beheaded in public. Canada's also got vodka tonics, BC bud, and pornography going for it, along with Tim Hortons, pork-sausage gravy on fries, and a just and equitable social-welfare system. Is Canada morally superior to Saudi Arabia? You bet. It's also morally superior to the United States of America.

"But back to the big SA: Unless you believe that cutting off the heads of homosexuals has a "deep and completely valid cultural context," or that men treating women as their property is a "value," you have to acknowledge that Saudi Arabia practices and promotes a thoroughly fucked-up brand of Islam. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia's state-sanctioned "morals police" are not, as you imply, an imperialistic fantasy of mine. They are, sadly, a fact of everyday life for Saudi Arabian women, gays, atheists, moderate/non-Wahabi Muslims, and anyone else who fails to live up to the pinched, sex-negative, deeply psychotic brand of monotheism practiced there.

"To paraphrase the U.N.'s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, I believe that human rights are universal, man. As Saudi Arabia exists in this universe, I think that the humans there—Muslim or not, liberal or conservative, male or female, gay or straight—are entitled to their full human rights. Until that day comes, SOS, I'm going to go right on thinking that Canada kicks Saudi Arabia's ass when it comes to morals and values. And bud."
